“Past certain ages or certain wisdoms, it is very difficult to look with wonder: it is best done when one is a child; after that, and if you are lucky, you will find a bridge of childhood and walk across it.” ~ Truman Capote

Carrie Prewitt specializes in contemporary children’s portraiture. Her photo sessions are conducted at any location of the clients’ choosing, utilizing natural light and true surroundings.

Carrie’s gift is to create timeless, honest portraits of children where they are most comfortable and beautiful - in their own worlds of home, play, and imagination.

Carrie is overjoyed to be back in her hometown of Jackson, TN with her husband and her two young children.

OK, so that’s my official press release. Since you’re taking time to read my blog, I’m assuming you want to know the really important stuff about me:

  • For me, photography is more than just showing up and taking some pictures of your children. For me, it’s a memory - a connection - a moment. I enjoy spending time with your children, really trying to understand what makes them smile or cry. I want the pictures from our sessions to become your treasured memory of how your child truly was, on that day, in that moment. I want to explore with your child texture, light, shadow, movement, quiet - and allow your pictures to truly reflect our time together.
  • Some of my best pictures come from moments when the child’s mother is saying, “Don’t do that! Look at the camera! Don’t lie down on the ground! Stop making faces!” If we allow our children to behave, undirected, as children, their true souls will shine through. The very best picture of my children when my daughter was an infant came out of a moment just like that. I was so frustrated because my son would not cooperate and kept being so wild and silly with his sister. But this is the picture that came out of that moment, which I will always treasure:

  • I eat raisin toast with nothing on it religiously every single morning. My little girl loves it too and I have to share with her or there is h*ll to pay. We must have a raisin-toast-loving genetic component.
  • I am a classically trained coloratura soprano and have taught voice for the last 14 years. I currently teach at Lambuth University.
  • Even though my son begs me to get a puppy every other day, I will not relent! I have trouble just keeping his fish tank clean. I know his two angelfish must feel like Nemo in the dirty aquarium (”I’m swimming in my own filth!”) and every time I feed them I am amazed they are still alive. Plus, my daughter is still in diapers. I do not need more bodily waste clean-up in my life.  OK, so check my latest post and you’ll see what a true softie I am.
  • Our family does not have cable TV because we cannot stand commercials. Instead, we pick shows we want to watch and purchase them from iTunes. Voila, no commercials! Everyone thinks that is so strange. When I returned the cable box over a year ago, the guy at the counter said, “So… you’re not switching to another company? You’re just… like… not going to have TV?” But seriously, when do I have time to watch TV? I can’t even keep the fish tank clean.
  • My hair used to be straight but after my son was born it turned curly.
  • “Harold and Maude” is my favorite movie.
  • I am currently reading “Shadow of the Wind” by Carlos Luis Zafon. It is fabulous!
  • My son will only eat pizza if it has pineapple on it.
  • My daughter really loves ducks. It was her first word and she meant it. Anything with a beak or a bill counts as a duck. A penguin? “duck” A stork? “duck” An ostrich? “duck”.
  • My husband has built lots of the furniture in our house. He’s a fantastic woodworker! *hint hint* (Hey, when are you going to get to that chest of drawers?)
  • You know you are really and truly a mother if you are late for school, can lug your kindergartener’s backpack (because it is “Too Heavy!!!!”) over your shoulder (the one without the purse), carry a baby in one arm, and a school science fair diorama about bats in the other.
  • I am so lucky to be where I am today, with a beautiful family - immediate and extended - all around me, to live by a little pond with ducks in it on the same street where I grew up (they aren’t the same ducks though), and to take pictures of lovely children and teach people how to sing for a living.

So now you know the real me - aren’t you glad you kept reading past the press release? ;)

    Carrie,

You are a precious soul. We feel lucky to have met you! What a gift you have - to see the world through such loving eyes. You have made a long lasting impression on our family, even my mom in the little time she was with us the day of our session! I hope you continue your beautiful work!
