to relent is sometimes a wonderful thing…
After much much begging, pleading, whining, and self-searching, we have welcomed a new “baby” into our home.
I have always been a cat person. Always. I enjoy petting other people’s dogs and occasionally even walk one if I am house-sitting. I think dogs are wonderful creatures and I also believe kids should have a dog to grow up with - to be a friend to them through thick and thin when no one else seems to understand the trials of just being a kid. But this earnest philosophy has always been hypothetical until last Sunday, when I learned that sometimes even a cat person can be persuaded to go to the other side. After all, who could resist this face?

I am now officially a dog person, at least for my own dog. My son named him “Jack” without hesitation. Somehow it suits him perfectly. Laid-back, docile, and highly tolerant of my two active children, Jack has already taught me more than I have taught him - mostly that sometimes it is good to go outside of our comfort zone and try something new. Jack will be a great adventure for our family. Also, did I mention, HUGE? Yes, he is a St. Bernard. People keep saying, “Oh my gosh, he’s going to be so BIG!!!” And I always say, “Yes, he will be about a foot tall.” When they look at me quizzically I say, “Well, he will mostly be lying down, so he will only be about a head tall!”

Caroline likes to say “Rest” - one of her favorite words - and demonstrate for Jack how it is done

“Nose” - another of her favorite words:

And in case you were wondering, Jack is not always quite this docile, although it does seem to his standard mood. He is still a three month old puppy. It is a little disconcerting to see a dog so big acting like a puppy and chasing his tail. Hopefully soon I will get some shots of how proud Jack looks when he is “Sitting” like a good dog.
Coming this week - another birthday party sneak peek!
