Jacob
Here’s the thing I love best about newborn sessions: when Mom needs to go change her shirt, guess who gets to hold the baby? And then when the baby actually falls asleep in my arms, like little Jacob did… well, then I realize I have the coolest job in the world. This 6-weeks-new baby was just so sweet, and calm, and easy-going, and curious about everything around him. He looked at the camera quite a bit too, allowing me to get some amazing shots. Often, newborns don’t even seem to notice I’m there, but Jacob was aware of everything going on around him. Even the family dog cooperated for a few pictures, posing like the awesome big brother he is.
And after we were done and little Jacob was zonked out in his swing with his paci (I want one too! A swing, not a paci…), his mom and I chatted for awhile. We talked about motherhood and the joys and hardships and laughter and general wonder that comes with that territory, and I realized that this is the other great part about doing what I do - getting to talk about being a mom with other moms. Because you can only understand these things if you are a mother too. And even if prior to your session I have never seen you before, we will not be strangers because we have motherhood in common, and that sure is a lot of common ground.
I was talking to my daughter’s preschool director last week, and I mentioned that I was excited because I had this newborn session coming up. And she said, with all the gentle wisdom that defines this wonderful lady, “There is such promise in a newborn!” And so that’s what I kept thinking about during this session, the promise that is there within little Jacob, supported by his loving, wonderful parents. And honestly, it is all somewhat overwhelming to think that I am attempting to capture only a tiny spark of all that promise with my one little camera.
So enjoy these sweet pictures, as I so very much enjoyed taking them.
