An idyllic family shoot…

I visited this amazing family last week, and mostly came away feeling that I should not tell my husband about where they live or we would be packing up the moving truck right now.  They live in their former vacation home on 500 acres, land which has been in their family for decades.  So this was not at all a typical shoot, since they have their pick of locations to take pictures.  We took pictures on a fabulous rock, in a stream with what they call their “waterfall”, in a cotton field, on a trail through the woods, and on a dock by their lake. In just a few hours we saw a snake in the water and a bunch of wild turkeys; we found red frogs, cool mushrooms, a box turtle (probably still living in his new home in the backyard), feathers and cotton blossoms; we raced Izzy, the really fast family dog, in the Mule; we had to go offroad around trees felled by the recent storms; and best of all, I held a LIVING hummingbird in my hand, felt the vibration of its heartbeat, then watched it fly away.

How do I even begin to tell the story of this family and how they have chosen to live? Trust me, these pictures are only a small fraction of the amazing shots I have from this session.

So let me introduce Jason and Casie, and their three beautiful and very smart sons Ethan, Shaw, and Trey.  Thanks, guys, for a perfect day.

Jackson, Hannah, and baby sister-to-be

I had so much fun at this session with handsome Jackson, sweet Hannah, their beautiful mom Rebecca and their soon-to-be-born baby sister.  We went to First Pres (It seems like I’ve been there a lot lately…) and the light was so pretty!   These two lovely children really love their mom, and it shows in these luminous pictures.  Their dad is in Iraq right now but will be home in the spring, and these pictures are a surprise to him.  I also feel so honored to soon be taking hospital pictures of the newborn baby,  so dad can see his new baby girl.

Jackson really enjoyed showing me his Lightning McQueen cars and Hannah loved trying on the big tutu I brought.  I LOVE her tiny pink fingernails (chipped, of course).  I think that one was my favorite picture from this session.

The pictures you don’t see are the ones where the kids are climbing all over their mom after I took the ones of them together in the grass.  To be a mom you sure have to be tough.  Nobody ever talks about how many times you can be inadvertantly injured in one day just from taking care of kids!  But Rebecca is the most patient mom ever, and didn’t even seem to mind.

Welcome to the World, Baby Girl Josie…

If you follow this blog, you have seen recently the beautiful pictures of Jacob and his mom Nicole.  Well, meet little Josie Kate.  She is one of the most beautiful newborns I’ve ever seen.  I had the honor of going to the hospital this weekend to take pictures of her, when she wasn’t even 24 hours old yet.  Most newborns are sort of splotchy and red, but Josie must have inherited her mother’s lovely skin, because I did not even have to retouch these pictures at all.  These images came staight out of the camera looking just like this, except for changing some of them to black and white or erasing (just for this blog of course) Josie’s last name from her hospital bracelet.

I always told my little boy when his own baby sister was born that babies don’t know much, but they know all about love.  And this will certainly be true for little Josie, who has the great fortune of being born into a family full of love.

Did I mention recently that I love my job?

Welcome to the world, baby girl.

Kudos from the press (plus some cute pictures!)

In skimming through my hometown newspaper recently, I came across a mention in an article about a “Garden Affair” sponsored by a local bank and hosted at Randolph’s Nursery, a favorite place of mine.  I had a small display in a tent there, although I could not attend the event myself.

The columnist, Jacque Hillman, had this to say:

“Carrie Prewitt, who does lovely photography, had let us share her tent, since she couldn’t be there.  On this Mother’s Day, I wish I had little ones (for a little bit) so that I could have their pictures made with Carrie.”

Thanks Jacque, for the kind words.

And since no post is complete without pictures, here are some shots of my sweet Caroline visiting Randolph’s Nursery a few weeks ago.  If you’re ever in Jackson, it is a wonderful place to visit – just the happiest place!  Make sure you have room in your car for a load of plants and lots of advice.

Here you can get a peek of Rita Randolph’s quirky sense of humor.  Caroline didn’t know what to think!  I have a theory that this little visit may have set our potty training back a little…

Jacob and his soon-to-be little sister

img_5572-edit-edit.jpg

I don’t even know where to begin with this session, which has turned out to be probably one of the best sessions I have ever done.  First of all, the light… well, it was perfect. “High silk” is what photographers call it.  It was cloudy but not too much, so it wasn’t gloomy at all.  Just a perfect diffuser for the morning sun.  Then there was 2-years-young Jacob, who has to be one of the most exuberant little fellows I have ever met. He just never stopped smiling the whole time.  And these weren’t just little smiles either. I pretty much have an entire session full of huge all-out smiles. I asked his mom if he was always like that, and she said he was. Except when he is upset.  And then he swings totally in the opposite direction… I pity his mom when he’s in the opposite mood, because that must be really something to see.

Then there is Jacob’s mom, who is SO beautiful in her last month of pregnancy, carrying Jacob’s little sister.  She was exuberant too, in her love for her little boy.  I remember so clearly when I was pregnant with my little girl, and those last few months of being with my son before my daughter was born. I knew our lives were about to change, that he would no longer be an only child.  I felt almost guilty because I knew those precious times when it was just the two of us were about to be gone forever.  But of course I also knew that he would have a little sister to love who would love him back, so my small guilt was assuaged.  Love is such a funny thing.  There is always enough of it to go around.

The reason I love what I do is because I get to watch people who are totally in love with each other.  Parents and kids, husbands and wives… and babies to be.  This was just one of the sweetest sessions I’ve ever done, and all because Nicole and Jacob inhabit their own world of love.

We did this session at First Pres, and then moved to the Train Depot for a few shots.  And when Nicole brought out the rainboots I knew I had died and gone to photographer heaven.  Anyone who knows me at all knows my obsession with kids and rainboots.

So enjoy these sweet sweet pictures.  My dilemma now is how I’m supposed to cull this session down to 35 or so pictures when over 150 pictures ended up in my “keep” pile.  I guess it’s a good problem to have.
