“The Little Match Girl” from “East of the Sun and West of the Moon”

“The Little Match Girl”

This image was one of the audience favorites at the art show opening.  The beautiful child pictured here is Sadie, whom I have photographed since she was a baby. My, has she grown!

This story has long fascinated me, even though it is most certainly a dark story. When I was little I had a book containing this story, and I can still remember the illustration of the little match lighting up the entire street. I interpreted the story differently, but hope I did Hans Christian Andersen’s wonderful moral story justice. The quote I used, although very sad, is definitely not the tragic part of this tale.  If you have ever read the story you know that in the end the little match girl goes on to her heavenly reward, comforted by her grandmother’s spirit. But I was not so macabre as to illustrate that part!

In this image, I love the way Sadie is looking through the door. I think she was in reality a little apprehensive because it was dark in my studio! I also love the way the shadows were on the wall behind her.  I was very proud of the way this one turned out!

Kayelee and Dylan

I just love these kids. They are so exuberant! Kayelee was SO cute and funny, and I just love her curls. Dylan has grown up so much since I saw him last! He is starting to look like such a little boy! We had a great day for our session! After a chilly start to the day, the weather warmed up just enough.

Rayanna

All I can say about this little one is WOW. She is just beautiful, and smart, and so sweet. I have been so honored to have taken her pictures since she was a tiny baby, and I just can’t believe how fast she is growing up.

“Hansel and Gretel” from “East of the Sun and West of the Moon”

“Hansel and Gretel”

These little cuties were perfect for Hansel and Gretel.  I just LOVE their red hair. This image was one of the most complex illustrations I did.  In fact, I may post a series of images showing how I did it! If you are a subscriber to my newsletter (see tab on the left of the page) you may have already seen it!

This is obviously one of the most well-known stories of all time, a classic Grimm brothers tale. Interestingly, I found many versions of this story with different variations, such as the story called “Brother and Sister”, in which the brother and sister run away from home and then the brother is turned into a deer after he drinks from a magical stream. The sister later has to rescue him. (Similar to the Three Ravens story). Hansel and Gretel was originally called “Little Brother and Little Sister”, so you can see where some confusion arises!

“Hansel and Gretel” is usually illustrated with the children walking through the forest dropping bread crumbs, and while that would certainly have been easier to illustrate, I really wanted to show the moment where they discover the cottage in the woods. Notice the birds again!

“Robin Hood” from “East of the Sun and West of the Moon”

“Robin Hood”

My son as Robin Hood.  Given his love of bows and arrows, and the fact that he had made this shelter sort of structure out of scrap wood and sticks in our yard, Robin Hood was an obvious choice for him. It was SO cold outside on this day, but I was determined to get this picture done before the glorious autumn leaves all fell off the trees. William’s poor little cheeks were so red when we got back to the house!
