Rayanna

All I can say about this little one is WOW. She is just beautiful, and smart, and so sweet. I have been so honored to have taken her pictures since she was a tiny baby, and I just can’t believe how fast she is growing up.

“Hansel and Gretel” from “East of the Sun and West of the Moon”

“Hansel and Gretel”

These little cuties were perfect for Hansel and Gretel.  I just LOVE their red hair. This image was one of the most complex illustrations I did.  In fact, I may post a series of images showing how I did it! If you are a subscriber to my newsletter (see tab on the left of the page) you may have already seen it!

This is obviously one of the most well-known stories of all time, a classic Grimm brothers tale. Interestingly, I found many versions of this story with different variations, such as the story called “Brother and Sister”, in which the brother and sister run away from home and then the brother is turned into a deer after he drinks from a magical stream. The sister later has to rescue him. (Similar to the Three Ravens story). Hansel and Gretel was originally called “Little Brother and Little Sister”, so you can see where some confusion arises!

“Hansel and Gretel” is usually illustrated with the children walking through the forest dropping bread crumbs, and while that would certainly have been easier to illustrate, I really wanted to show the moment where they discover the cottage in the woods. Notice the birds again!

My 12×12 book, “East of the Sun and West of the Moon”, which contains the entire exhibition including the beautiful accompanying story pages, is available for purchase online here in hardcover and softcover.

If you would like to view the entire exhibit in person, you can visit  The Bank of Jackson on Oil Well Road, second floor, until May 31.

“Robin Hood” from “East of the Sun and West of the Moon”

“Robin Hood”

My son as Robin Hood.  Given his love of bows and arrows, and the fact that he had made this shelter sort of structure out of scrap wood and sticks in our yard, Robin Hood was an obvious choice for him. It was SO cold outside on this day, but I was determined to get this picture done before the glorious autumn leaves all fell off the trees. William’s poor little cheeks were so red when we got back to the house!

“Rapunzel” from “East of the Sun and West of the Moon”

“Rapunzel”

Here she is, the beautiful Brianna as Rapunzel. And although she doesn’t really have hair THAT long, it is STILL REALLY LONG, which is why I asked her to be my Rapunzel. At the time we did this shoot last year, her hair was indeed past her waist, and it really is that curly. Her mother announced to me before this shoot that she had even washed and combed Brianna’s hair just for me! I felt very honored at that! In order to achieve this image, I had to have a model with hair I could duplicate and work with in post-processing.  But I don’t love this girl just for her fabulous hair. She is beautiful, yes, but most importantly, she is smart, and kind, and full of awesome personality – all the things we should most value in our children.

Notice the little bird on her arm? In case you haven’t figured it out yet, I have a thing about birds.  They ended up being a recurring theme throughout many of the pictures, even though that was not my original intent.
